Pr. of Criminology (Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour)
Robert Cario has been a Professor Emeritus of criminology at the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour since January 1st 2014. He headed the Jean Pinatel Unit of Comparative Criminal Sciences (UJP/CRAJ) and created the Master of criminology in 1999.Since 1985 he has mostly been teaching criminology, victimology and restorative penology. After being in contact with the offender’s side of crime (women and juvenile criminals) and then the victim’s side of crime, his current research work focuses on restorative justice.
He is the author of a great many articles in the field of aggressology, victimology and restorative justice, published in French and foreign journals.His latest works are the following: Restorative Justice (2nd ed. 2010); Victimology (4th ed. 2012); The inmate-victim meetings (Eds) 2012.
His associative commitment in favour of people in distress dates back to the 1980s: co-founder of “L’Astragale”, an association of reintegration of prisoners upon release in Rennes; co-founder of the Pyrenean Association of aid to victims and mediation ( Association pyrénéenne d’aide aux victims et de médiation, APAVIM in French) in 1990 in Pau, Chair from 2001 to 2011; member of the “European Forum for Restorative Justice” since its inception in 1999; member and co-founder of the “French Platform for Restorative Justice” (2013); co-founder of the journal THYMA,the French journal of victimology (2015).
He also is a member of numerous human rights organizations as well as scientific and humanitarian associations. He is the founder and chair of the French Institute for Restorative Justice (IFJR) set up in Pau in 2013.
